JONESBORO — A little more than a year after converting the former Coca-Cola plant at Highland Drive and Caraway Road in Jonesboro into a popular retail establishment, a Jonesboro store’s future is uncertain.
Brothers Terry and Monte Hays, who own Hays Clothing store in Jonesboro as well as locations in Searcy and Judsonia, plan to retire.
All three Hays Clothing stores will begin retirement sales Dec. 8.
Word of the Hays brothers’ retirement plans was disclosed in a recent memo to vendors, a portion of which was leaked to The Sun.
However, the store at Searcy will reopen and be operated by Tyler Hays, his father, Terry Hays, said Tuesday.
The Searcy store will be known as Hays Generation 2, he said.
The sale of the Jonesboro store’s real estate is scheduled to close today. A local technology company will purchase the building. The buyer declined to comment on the transaction because he hasn’t informed his staff.
Josh Brown of Haag Brown Commercial Real Estate, who brokered the sale, said the Hays brothers will lease the building from the buyer until they’ve liquidated their inventory.
“It will be months down the road before this transition takes place,” Brown said.
Terry and Monte Hays opened their first store in Judsonia about 35 years ago. They opened a second store in Searcy. Combined, the three stores generated about $25 million a year in sales.
Brown said part of the former Coca-Cola property will be developed by a national restaurant chain.
